Choctaw Downtown Streetscape Design
The City of Choctaw, Oklahoma was hit by a major tornado in the Spring of 1999 that destroyed virtually all of the downtown area. In addition to the destruction of downtown buildings, the city's infrastructure was also damaged, including Main Street in the downtown area. The City of Choctaw received a grant from the federal government to rebuild Main Street. Rather than rebuild Main Street as it was, the city sought design assistance to formulate a new design scheme for the downtown. Camiros, as a subconsultant to ICF Consulting, was retained by HUD to prepare a new streetscape design. The new plan is based on making Main Street a pedestrian-oriented environment. Parking is located in the middle of the street along with major plazas and landscape areas. The two major downtown intersections will become focal points through the construction of monument circles that will contain a band shell and formal landscape treatments. Construction is scheduled for the Spring of 2001.
