Midwest City Disaster Recovery Back to the index page

Camiros, Ltd. was engaged by the Department of Housing and Urban Development to assist Midwest City, Oklahoma with physical planning issues related to storm damage incurred from a series of devastating tornados on May 3, 1999. Hardest hit was an area of the city located along the interchange of Interstate 40 and Sooner Road. This site was home to the city's hotel and restaurant core that had provided to both Tinker Air Force Base and Rose State Community College a primary guest lodging destination. Four hotels and a compliment of restaurants were completely destroyed, while the remaining three hotels sustained major damage.

In rebuilding the site, city officials sought to better utilize the land by constructing a municipal conference center campus with five hotels, three restaurants and corporate office space. Located next to Rose State Community College, the convention center is marketed as a companion facility to the College's Communications Center. Site amenities include a major focal point entrance treatment on the frontage road, boulevard landscape treatments along major streets, and a retaining pond and trail system that links different uses into a pedestrian-friendly walkable campus environment.

Three sketch plans were prepared to illustrate different development scenarios; two are shown below.
