Glenview Naval Air Station Reuse Plan Back to the index page

When the closure of Glenview Naval Station (GNAS) was scheduled by the Navy for 1995, the Village of Glenview retained a team of consultants led by Camiros to develop a reuse plan. In most cases, bases on the brink of closure are huge tracts of land located in rural areas with little infrastructure support and big impacts on local economies due to the civilian jobs they provide or support. Finding some use - any use - for the properties and replacing lost jobs are the highest priorities.

In Glenview, the economic impact will be negligible and primarily positive. The base occupied more than 1200 acres in the heart of one of Chicago's most desirable suburban areas. Under new base closing rules promulgated in 1993, the Village of Glenview and its companion units of government gained much more leeway in involving the community in the development of a reuse plan and more control over the outcome. The Navy proved to be extremely cooperative in this process.
