Milwaukee Avenue Plan
The Village of Niles, in partnership with the Regional Transportation
Authority and Pace suburban bus agency, retained Camiros to
develop a plan which coordinates future development with transportation
and transit improvements along the Milwaukee Avenue Corridor.
The corridor is the commercial spine of the Village of Niles,
and its mix of storefronts, strip malls, indoor mall, and
big box outlets is an important shopping for local residents
and the main source of revenue supporting Village services.
The plan focuses on revitalizing the corridor through coordinated
improvements to transit facilities, traffic circulation, and
streetscape. Site planning principles control vehicular access
and reduce the number of curb cuts, aiding traffic flow and
reducing congestion and air pollution levels. A key element
was improvements to Pace operations and facilities in keeping
with the concept of an arterial bus rapid transit.
